Heilige Stiege

The Heilige Stiege features 28 marble steps leading to the choir of the pilgrimage church on Kreuzberg hill in Bonn, with brass crosses marking specific steps.

Archbishop Clemens August commissioned Balthasar Neumann to construct this replica of Rome's Scala Santa, completing the project in 1751 as Neumann's final work.

Pilgrims ascend the stairs on their knees during Good Friday and Holy Saturday, offering prayers at each step until reaching the altar with Jesus on the cross.

The sacred staircase opens to visitors on Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and September 14th for the Feast of the Cross, while external viewing remains possible year-round.

The walls display Johann Adam Schöpf's paintings of the Passion, with brass crosses on the second, eleventh, and twentieth steps indicating where Christ's blood fell.
