Melbtal, Nature reserve in Bonn, Germany
Melbtal is a nature reserve in Bonn featuring a steep valley with the natural Engelsbach stream running through it and slope forests on both sides. The area spans several hectares between the districts of Ippendorf and Poppelsdorf.
The area received its official protection status in February 2013 through the Kottenforst landscape plan, establishing legal safeguards for the valley. This designation marked the beginning of concrete conservation measures for the region.
The name Melb comes from Celtic language and refers to clay deposits found in the region. Engelsbach stream takes its name from a former monastery that once stood nearby.
You can explore the area using walking paths on both sides of the valley that lead to different viewpoints and observation areas. Staying on marked trails is important to protect the wildlife and natural features of the reserve.
The valley creates a special cold air drainage effect called the Melbtalwind phenomenon, which naturally lowers temperatures in central Bonn during summer months. This effect comes from the geological structure of the valley and plays an important role in the city's climate.
