Dürrerhof, Historical park in Hötzelsroda, Germany
Dürrerhof is a park in Hötzelsroda built on the grounds of a former manor house, with old deciduous trees and pathways throughout the property. An artificial grotto on the site adds to its distinctive character.
The site began as a fortified grain storage called Meiczrit in 1403 before becoming a noble residence in later centuries. In the 20th century it underwent industrial use before passing to city management in 1992.
The land was long owned by the Eichel family, who used the estate as a residence and shaped the surrounding landscape. Visitors today can see how this private property gradually became a place open to the public.
The park sits roughly three kilometers northeast of Eisenach and is reached via a chestnut-lined avenue that is easy to walk. The landscape transitions into a wooded area where the paths become more natural and less manicured.
A section of the park was converted into a BMW aircraft engine factory between 1936 and the end of World War II, a chapter often overlooked by visitors. This industrial chapter left marks on the land and shows how this place played different roles over time.
