Hohenloher Freilandmuseum Wackershofen, Open-air museum in Schwäbisch Hall, Germany
The Hohenloher Freilandmuseum is an open-air museum spread across a large site with more than 70 historic buildings relocated from different regions. The structures date from the Middle Ages to the early 1900s and display furnished interiors showing how people once lived and worked.
The museum was founded in 1983 and grew from an earlier agricultural museum called Schönenberg that started with 13 buildings in 1972. More structures were gradually added over time to preserve the region's rural architecture.
The buildings are organized by regional themes, showing how people of different social classes lived side by side. You can see wine grower homes next to farmhouses and notice how living conditions varied based on occupation and wealth.
The museum is accessible from March through November with extended hours during summer months. Wear comfortable shoes because the grounds are large and require considerable walking to explore all areas.
The site maintains working farm areas with cattle, sheep, and poultry, giving visitors a sense of how daily farm life once functioned. Regular cheese markets and demonstrations of traditional crafts bring the historical rural experience to life.
