St. Jodokus

St. Jodokus is a church in Bielefeld built in Gothic style, recognizable by its pointed arches, ribbed vaulted ceilings, and external flying buttresses. The building displays the typical features of this architectural approach through its vertical lines and sturdy supporting elements.

The church began as a Franciscan convent building and was consecrated in 1511. It remained Catholic during the Reformation and stood in place until the convent dissolved in 1829.

The interior holds religious artworks that visitors notice as they walk through: a dark statue of Mary, a carved wooden figure of Saint Jodokus, and a large organ shape the feeling of the space.

The location sits centrally in Bielefeld and is walkable from the main streets of the old town. Visitors should check for open times upon arrival, as the church may have limited access for tourists during services or events.

Especially noteworthy is a wooden shrine from 1500 displaying figures of a bishop, the Virgin Mary, and the archangel Michael. This finely crafted work remains in its original location and offers a glimpse of medieval craftsmanship.
