Crüwell-Haus, Architectural heritage monument in Old Market, Bielefeld, Germany

The Crüwell-Haus is a heritage monument at the Old Market in Bielefeld, featuring a four-part stepped gable made of sandstone that rises five stories above its two-story base structure. The facade displays crafted details, and the interior preserves important historical room furnishings.

The building was constructed around 1530 and housed a tobacco factory from 1705 until 1983. A coat of arms on the original gable memorializes this long industrial past of the structure.

The staircase contains thousands of Delft tiles from the 16th to 18th centuries, forming one of northwestern Germany's largest collections of these decorative ceramics. These tiles shape how the interior feels and show the craftsmanship of past eras.

The building stands at the intersection of Obernstraße and Old Market Square, making it easy to find as a central landmark in the historic city center. Its distinctive stepped gable shape helps identify it from different angles.

The structure survived World War II with its original stepped gable intact, yet required complete reconstruction in 1948 under architect Paul Griesser's direction. This rebuilding preserved the historic gable shape and made the building a testament to Bielefeld's post-war restoration.
