Landschaftspark Hohenstein

Landschaftspark Hohenstein is a heritage park on the steep northern bank of Eckernförde Bay, extending across the municipality of Barkelsby in Schleswig-Holstein. The grounds feature several ponds and small lakes, especially in the eastern section, creating a natural water landscape connected by walking paths.

The estate became a manor house in 1802 and received a classical dwelling for Johann Diederich Cordes. Major landscape redesign happened after 1879 following a marriage between owners, with these changes completed by 1883.

The grounds reflect the vision of multiple owners who shaped its appearance over generations through their personal ideas about landscape design. You can see these layers in how the paths and water features are arranged throughout the site.

The site is easy to explore on foot with marked paths connecting all sections of the park, making it accessible for visitors with varying mobility levels. Taking time to walk through each area slowly lets you notice the details of the water features and plant life.

A hexagonal tower added during the neo-gothic expansion of the manor house offers views stretching toward the Baltic Sea. This tower is often overlooked by visitors but shows how the house was redesigned to create new vantage points across the landscape.
