St. Peter und Paul, Romanesque church building in Heiningen, Germany
St. Peter und Paul is a Romanesque church in Heiningen featuring a pure basilica design with a cross-shaped floor plan. A rectangular tower anchors the western end and gives the building its distinctive profile.
The monastery and church were founded around 1000 by Hildeswid and Alburgis from the Saxon noble family of the Billunger. This establishment created an early monastic center in the region.
Wall paintings in the apse and southern side chapel display religious scenes and figures from the early 13th century. These artworks offer a window into how saints and biblical subjects were depicted during that period.
The church is open to visitors during regular hours and operates as a subsidiary of St. Petrus in Wolfenbüttel. When planning a visit, keep in mind that religious services take place at scheduled times and may limit access.
The interior preserves painted figures of the founders Hildeswid and Alburg from the late 13th century, each about 1.70 meters (5.5 feet) tall. These depictions of the founders are rare surviving examples of medieval veneration of monastery patrons.
