Nahverkehrsmuseum Dortmund

The Nahverkehrsmuseum Dortmund is a railway museum housed in former locomotive sheds and wagon halls that display trams, buses, and other vehicles from different periods. The buildings themselves are part of the industrial transport history and give visitors a sense of how these vehicles were once maintained and stored.

The site was founded in 2003 out of a need to preserve the heritage of the tram and bus networks that formed the backbone of urban transport systems since the 19th century. The collection documents the technical development of public transport during the industrial expansion of the Ruhr region.

The collection reveals how residents of Dortmund relied on trams and buses across generations, showing the continuous improvements made to public transport in this industrial city. The displayed vehicles reflect the everyday journeys people took and how their mobility changed over time.

The museum is housed in accessible buildings with outdoor exhibition spaces and can be explored on foot, though wearing comfortable shoes is recommended since the grounds are expansive. Visitors should allow plenty of time to enjoy both the stationary vehicles and any historical tram rides that may be available.

Visitors can ride historical trams along original tracks of the Hansa line between Ellinghausen and Huckarde, passing through the grounds of a former coking plant. These rides offer a rare chance to experience the vehicles not just as displays but in their actual working function.
