Krähbergtunnel, Railway tunnel and cultural heritage monument in Oberzent, Germany

The Krähbergtunnel is a railway tunnel extending about 3100 meters through the terrain of Oberzent and connecting different sections of the regional rail network in Hesse. The tunnel passes through mountainous ground and remains a fully operational part of the railway infrastructure today.

Construction of the tunnel began in 1882 and was completed shortly after to create a vital railway connection through difficult terrain. The project was a major engineering achievement of that era and marked a milestone for bringing rail service to the region.

The tunnel serves as a protected cultural landmark that reveals the railway's importance for opening up the Odenwald region during the 1800s. Visitors can observe how this connection helped link isolated areas and enabled regional development.

The tunnel is still regularly used by trains and is best experienced from aboard a train. Visitors should use regular train services to pass through and experience the tunnel's construction and scale.

Building the tunnel required explosives and manual labor in the 1800s to break through the rock and lay the tracks. You can still see traces of these early construction methods in the tunnel's structure today.
