Früh em Veedel, Brewpub in Cologne, Germany
Früh em Veedel is a brewpub and former distillery located at Chlodwigplatz 28 in Cologne's Severinsviertel. The three-story neo-Gothic brick building, constructed in 1885/1886, is a protected monument and features a rustic interior with a historic still, old photographs, and wall paintings, offering 80 seats indoors, 40 on the terrace, and a large bar area.
The building was erected in 1885/1886 on the site of the former medieval city wall. Until 1979, the Hermann family operated a distillery and tavern here, and then the Cölner Hofbräu Früh took over, continuing the tradition of homemade schnapps and liqueurs.
Locals affectionately call the place "Invalidendom" because retirees and veterans used to gather here early in the morning to start the day with a schnapps. Today, it remains a meeting point for the neighborhood, where people chat over a Kölsch and enjoy traditional Rhineland dishes.
The pub is easy to reach by tram or on foot from the nearby Severinstorburg. It can get crowded in the evenings and on weekends, so arriving early or reserving a table is a good idea, and the terrace is a nice spot on sunny days.
The pub still produces its own schnapps and liqueurs based on old recipes, such as Alter Ulan, Deck und Dönn, and Stippeföttche, a peppermint liqueur. A part of the historic distillery remains in the restaurant, and old photos on the walls recall the days when it was a distillery.
