Oberschloss Bonfeld

Oberschloss Bonfeld is a Baroque château located near Bad Rappenau, featuring a rectangular structure that spans eleven axes across its facade. The two-story building is topped with a mansard roof and decorated with corner pilasters throughout its exterior.

The Lords of Gemmingen initiated construction in 1748 on the foundations of a medieval fortress, and the château was completed following extensive renovations. The family retained ownership until 1940, when the property transferred to the Gebhard family who have maintained it since.

The structure reflects the building traditions of rural Baden-Württemberg, with grand staircases and balustrades that lead to enclosed castle gardens visible throughout the property. Visitors can observe how these design features showcase the lifestyle of a wealthy family during that period.

The property remains privately owned and can be viewed from the outside, with autumn being an ideal time to visit when the surrounding gardens show their seasonal colors. A visit works well when walking or driving through the area to appreciate the exterior and the surrounding Baden-Württemberg countryside.

During the Baden Revolution of 1849, the château became entangled in military conflict and turmoil affecting the entire region. A captain lost his life in the gardens during this turbulent period, marking one of the darker chapters in its past.
