The Bützow Correctional Facility extends across 270,000 square meters of land, making it one of the largest prison complexes in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern state.
Built between 1835 and 1839 as the Grand Ducal Mecklenburg-Schwerin State Penitentiary, the facility began operations with 60 inmates and expanded to house 247 prisoners by 1843.
The facility integrates animal therapy programs through a cat project in partnership with the German Animal Protection Association of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
The prison maintains a capacity of 400 inmates, including 35 dedicated spaces for female prisoners, along with specialized units for psychological assessment.
The facility operates a diagnostic center focusing on long-sentence prisoners and includes departments for geriatric care and addiction therapy.
