Correctional facility Bützow

The Bützow correctional facility is a prison in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern featuring multiple building complexes spread across a large site. It includes separate areas for different types of inmates and specialized departments designed to serve various care and assessment needs.

The facility was built between 1835 and 1839 as the Grand Ducal Mecklenburg-Schwerin State Penitentiary and was initially designed for a small number of inmates. It underwent several expansions over the following decades to meet growing demand for prison space.

The facility integrates animal therapy programs through a cat project in partnership with the German Animal Protection Association of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

The site is not open to the public, as it operates as an active correctional facility with strict security protocols. Visitors can view the buildings from outside the perimeter and should observe all security guidelines when approaching the area.

The facility operates a diagnostic center focusing on long-sentence prisoners and includes departments for geriatric care and addiction therapy.
