Kalkwerk Crottendorf is a quarry in the Erzgebirge region that extracts limestone and marble from a lens-shaped rock layer. The site shows visible geological layers in its walls and has been worked for raw stone production.
The quarry first appears in records from 1559, with organized extraction beginning in 1587 under architect Giovanni Maria Nosseni. Later it became an important source of raw materials for various industrial purposes.
The marble extracted here was used in regional buildings, including Freiberg Cathedral and other historic structures. Visitors can still see traces of this material in the landscape today.
The quarry is located in a hilly area and is best explored on foot to see the different layers and extraction areas. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear since the terrain is uneven and partly steep.
The site contains a rare deposit of white marble surrounded by distinct rock formations. This geological feature makes the quarry noteworthy from a scientific perspective.
