Maria-Magdalenen-Kapelle, Medieval chapel in Brunswick, Germany
Maria-Magdalenen-Kapelle was a church building in Brunswick featuring walls with multiple sides and late Gothic design. Stone carvings adorned both the exterior and interior surfaces throughout the structure.
The chapel was built in 1499 as a replacement for an earlier chapel from 1237. It survived World War II bombing but was demolished in 1955 to make way for a press building.
The chapel served the local community as a worship space after World War II when their main church required reconstruction. It became a gathering place during a time when regular religious practice was disrupted.
The location was west of the current gymnasium at Kleine Burg 8. To understand what remains of this building, you can visit the preserved Magdalene sculpture kept at the BZV media house.
The building was one of the few early modern structures that remained untouched during the heavy bombing of Brunswick in World War II. Its survival was striking compared to the widespread destruction around it.
