Schloss Loburg, Heritage castle in Ostbevern, Germany
Schloss Loburg is a moated castle in Ostbevern, North Rhine-Westphalia, built in the baroque style and surrounded by water-filled ditches. The estate groups several historic buildings around an oval courtyard, with a range of outbuildings that together form a large noble residence complex.
The estate appears in records as far back as 1294 under the name Lohaus, when it was owned by the Schulzen von Lohove family. Over the following centuries, major rebuilding works gave it the baroque appearance it has today.
The castle serves as a school today, so it is part of everyday life for students rather than tourists. On special occasions, the grounds open for concerts and events where visitors can enter the historic spaces.
The castle building itself is not open to the public because it operates as a school, but the park around it can be visited freely. Information panels on the grounds offer details about the history and layout of the estate.
The grounds contain some of the oldest Douglas fir trees in northern Germany, planted at a time when this North American species was barely known in Europe. They are a quiet trace of the botanical curiosity that led many estate owners to collect foreign tree species in the 18th and 19th centuries.
