Kaiserbauruine, Unfinished hotel building in Troisdorf, Germany
The Kaiserbauruine was an unfinished hotel structure with 13 floors of reinforced concrete built near the Cologne/Bonn airport between 1974 and 1975. The building was designed to hold 1200 beds and 600 apartments but remained abandoned after construction halted early in the project.
The hotel project launched in 1974 but halted in 1975 due to financial difficulties that left the building incomplete. It remained standing for nearly three decades before being demolished in 2001.
In 1999, artist HA Schult transformed the facade with 130 portraits of European figures, creating a site called Hotel Europa. This artistic intervention turned the abandoned structure into a noteworthy landmark for the region.
The site was located directly at the A59 highway intersection, which opened in 1996 and provided access to airport transport links. Visitors should know that the ruins were only visible from a distance and are no longer accessible today.
The 2001 demolition was a major public event that drew roughly 20,000 spectators to watch the complex implosion. This spectacular destruction gave the site brief fame as a memorable moment in the region's history.
