Zisterzienserinnenkloster, später Augustinerchorherrenstift Kirschgarten, Worms

Zisterzienserinnenkloster, später Augustinerchorherrenstift Kirschgarten, Worms, Religious monastery in Worms, Germany.

The Kirschgarten Monastery in Worms is a former Cistercian nunnery that later became an Augustinian community, located on the southwestern edge of the city. The complex displays typical Gothic architecture with vaulted ceilings and supporting pillars arranged around the communal spaces.

The monastery was founded in 1226 as a Cistercian nunnery and remained under episcopal oversight. In 1443, it underwent a major transition when Augustinian canons took over, marking a significant change in its religious life.

The monastery served as a spiritual community where women and later men gathered for prayer and scholarly pursuits. Visitors can still sense the presence of religious life in the remaining structures today.

The monastery is located on the southwestern edge of Worms and was historically reached via the Speyer Gate, marking its position outside the inner city walls. Modern visitors should be aware that not all sections may be open to the public, so checking ahead before visiting is advisable.

In the 14th century, financial difficulties forced the monastery to disclose and sell portions of its properties to manage debts. This episode reveals the economic struggles that even wealthy religious institutions faced during medieval times.
