Johanneskirche, Protestant church in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany
Johanneskirche is a Protestant church with an octagonal entrance section and two 60-meter towers that dominate its facade. The interior is organized to accommodate around 900 people and features Romanesque Revival design elements throughout.
Construction of the church began in 1894 on a former gasworks site near the Dreisam river and was completed in 1899. Major renovation projects in the 1970s and 2000s updated both the interior and exterior of the building.
The stained glass windows by Fritz Geiges fill the interior with colored light and religious imagery that draws the eye upward. These works shape how visitors experience the space and its spiritual character.
The church is located in a central area of Freiburg and is accessible to visitors during regular opening hours. Morning or early afternoon visits allow you to see how the light moves through the windows and illuminates the interior.
The eastern gallery houses a Metzler organ with 50 stops spread across three keyboards and pedals, creating rich musical possibilities. This instrument remains in active use and represents a fine example of organ craftsmanship from that era.
