Kloster Schienen, Benedictine monastery in Öhningen, Germany
Kloster Schienen is a Benedictine monastery on the Höri peninsula near Lake Constance in Baden-Württemberg. The complex includes a church with Romanesque architecture, former monastic buildings, and a parish office housed in the historic structure.
A nobleman called Schrot founded the monastery near the end of the 9th century and built it as a Benedictine abbey. Later it became a provostry, and its church took on the Romanesque form that is still visible today during this transformation.
The church building shows the layout of a former Benedictine community, and the space is still shaped by religious practice today. Visitors come to pray at the same location where monks gathered for centuries, and pilgrims continue this tradition on feast days.
The site is open year-round, especially on religious holidays and pilgrimage seasons when many visitors arrive. The location sits on a peninsula with nice views and is easy to reach on foot, with plenty of space to walk around and explore the grounds.
The church holds the remains of two saints that were brought here in the early medieval period and drew believers. These relics made the location an important stop for pilgrims traveling from across the region.
