Kloster Frauenberg, Franciscan monastery on Frauenberg hill, Fulda, Germany
Kloster Frauenberg is a Franciscan monastery on a hill at the edge of Fulda's old town, centered around a late baroque church. The complex includes guest rooms, meeting spaces, and a garden that opens toward a wide view over the city below.
A Benedictine community was established on this hill sometime between 802 and 817 and remained there until 1525. The Franciscans took over in 1620 and shaped the complex into the form it still holds today.
The name Frauenberg refers to the long tradition of Marian devotion tied to this hilltop site. The church remains a pilgrimage destination, and visitors can still find a small chapel dedicated to Mary inside the complex.
The monastery sits just outside Fulda's city center and can be reached on foot from the main train station in a short walk uphill. Comfortable shoes are a good idea since the path rises steadily toward the hilltop.
The monastery runs workshops in cooking, laundry, and tailoring together with the Antonius Foundation, a local social organization. People with disabilities work in these spaces as part of the daily life of the complex, making their contribution visible to anyone who visits.
