Kolk-Tower, Steel observation tower in Dölauer Heide, Germany.
The Kolk-Tower is a steel lattice observation tower standing 15.5 meters tall above Dölauer Heide with a viewing platform at the top. From there you see the nature reserve stretch out below and the city of Halle visible in the distance on clear days.
This tower was built in 1976 during East Germany's period of expanding recreational infrastructure in public spaces. It came at a time when the state invested in facilities that would draw visitors to natural areas around cities.
The tower shows how people in the 1970s thought about enjoying nature, with steel structures becoming a common way to give visitors a new point of view. You can feel the design choices of that era when you climb here.
You need good physical condition to climb the stairs, and the tower is not accessible by wheelchair. Wear proper shoes and be aware that the open steel structure may feel exposed if you are afraid of heights.
On clear days, you can photograph both dense forest and the city skyline of Halle at the same time from the platform. Few visitors realize how well the tower bridges these two different worlds.
