Brandberge, Nature reserve in Halle (Saale), Germany.
Brandberge is a protected nature reserve in Halle (Saale) covering about 90 hectares, featuring porphyry hills, flat areas along the Saale River, and ancient kaolin deposits. The site contains different habitats such as dry heaths and wet meadows across varying elevations.
The area shows traces of Celtic and Germanic cultures that lived and used the land here over centuries. In more recent times, the site served military purposes until it was transformed into a nature reserve in the early 2000s.
The landscape supports rare plant communities such as dry heaths and wet meadows, giving visitors a sense of natural habitats that exist here. People use the trails today mainly for walking and observing these different ecosystems.
The site is easy to explore on foot with trails for different fitness levels, from casual walks to longer hikes. Comfortable shoes and depending on the season, weatherproof clothing are recommended, as parts of the terrain can be marshy.
The site contains remains of a military-era amphitheater structure that is now barely visible in the landscape. The decaying structures show how the use of this place has fundamentally changed over the decades.
