Pömmelte ring sanctuary

Pömmelte ring sanctuary is a prehistoric site in Barby featuring circular structures made from wooden palisades, ditches, and earthen embankments measuring about 115 meters across. The reconstructed layout reveals how ancient builders organized this ceremonial space.

Excavations began in 2005 and uncovered evidence dating to around 2300 BCE from the Bell Beaker period. The site appears to have been used over many centuries, showing how long it remained important to the people in the region.

The site served as a gathering place where ancient communities performed rituals and ceremonies that were central to their beliefs and way of life. The carefully arranged structures suggest this location held deep importance for the people who built it.
