Barby

Barby is an urban municipality in Sachsen-Anhalt where the Saale River meets the Elbe. The town spreads across several districts and owes much of its character to these waterways.

The town developed over time as a significant location along the rivers. A major administrative reorganization in 2010 brought together neighboring communities into one municipality.

The town maintains active partnerships with Schöppenstedt in Germany, Aukštadvaris in Lithuania, and Pruchnik in Poland, fostering international connections.

The municipality comprises eleven separate districts, each maintaining its own local character. A ferry system across the Elbe provides essential connections to neighboring areas.

A special ferry connects the town to the opposite riverbank using an ingenious system powered entirely by the current. This traditional vessel operates without a motor and represents a remarkable feat of engineering.
