McGraw Kaserne, Military barracks in Obergiesing-Fasangarten, Germany.
McGraw Kaserne is a former military base in the Obergiesing-Fasangarten district with buildings from the post-war period. The main structure measures roughly 110 by 85 meters and stands 18 meters tall.
The barracks was used by the United States after the Second World War and served from 1945 to 1992 as a command center for operations in southern Germany. Following the departure of American troops, the site was converted to new civilian purposes.
The site served as a home for American military families who could shop, visit clinics, and spend leisure time within its grounds. This daily life created a small American community in the middle of Munich with its own routines and gathering spaces.
Parts of the site are accessible to the public today, though large areas are used by the police headquarters and residential units. It is wise to check in advance which sections are open to visitors.
The main building was one of the first steel-frame constructions in Germany and used this advanced building method in the post-war period. This construction approach was a modern technological solution at the time for creating quick and durable structures.
