Luftschiffhalle Düren, Military airship hangar in Düren, Germany.
The Luftschiffhalle Düren was a large military steel-frame structure built to house and service airships, measuring approximately 180 meters long, 70 meters wide, and 30 meters tall. The hangar was painted in camouflage colors and designed to protect aircraft from weather while allowing maintenance and fuel operations inside.
The site served as a military airship base from 1915 to 1917 during World War I, launching bombing missions toward France and Great Britain. After the war ended, the facility fell out of military use and the location never regained its strategic importance.
The facility had two different operational names depending on which military branch controlled it: the Imperial Navy called it 'Siegfried' while the Army administration used 'Dietrich'. This dual naming reflects the divided command structure of German military operations at the time.
The location is most easily reached on foot and sits near Düren's railway connections for public transport access. The area is relatively flat with the remains visible from outside, though sturdy shoes are recommended if you plan to explore the site grounds.
The site is remarkable because it remains the only historical airship hangar location in the Rhineland that has survived without being built over or significantly altered by modern development. This authenticity makes it a rare surviving example of early 1900s aviation history.
