Lupfen, Summit in Tuttlingen, Germany
Lupfen is a distinct summit in the Schwäbische Alb region that rises to about 975 meters and is surrounded by forests and meadows. The mountain forms a recognizable peak within this limestone plateau landscape in Baden-Württemberg.
During the High Middle Ages, a noble family established their castle seat on the ridge here, calling it the Guardian of the Baar. This strategic location allowed them to oversee the surrounding territory and important trade routes.
The observation tower here invites visitors to pause and take in the view across multiple surrounding valleys. The site has long served as a vantage point where people come to see the landscape spread out below them.
The summit is accessible via hiking trails from nearby railway stations including Spaichingen-Mitte, Rietheim, and Tuttlingen-Schulen. Sturdy footwear and sufficient time for the walk are recommended for visitors of any fitness level.
The protected natural area surrounding the summit covers 101 hectares and is home to fourteen grasshopper species and rare orchid varieties found in its limestone grasslands. This biodiversity makes it a valuable habitat for species adapted to these specialized conditions.
