Lupfen, Summit in Tuttlingen, Germany
Lupfen is a prominent outlier summit in the Swabian Alb, located in the Tuttlingen district of Baden-Württemberg. It rises above a limestone landscape of forests and dry grasslands and stands out clearly from the surrounding plateau.
In the High Middle Ages, a noble family built a castle on the ridge, which was known as the Guardian of the Baar. The position was chosen because it gave clear sight lines over the surrounding territory and the trade routes running through it.
An observation tower stands at the top and gives a wide view over the surrounding valleys and the plateau. Many visitors come here on weekends just to stand at the top and look out over the countryside below.
The summit can be reached on foot from several train stations in the area, including Spaichingen-Mitte, Rietheim, and Tuttlingen-Schulen. Sturdy footwear is a good idea, as the paths can be wet or uneven depending on the season.
The nature reserve around the summit is home to fourteen grasshopper species and rare orchids that grow in its limestone grasslands. These plants and insects depend on the thin, dry soils that form on limestone and are rarely found in other habitats.
