Modellbundesbahn, Rail transport model exhibition in Brakel, Germany
Modellbundesbahn is a model railway exhibition in Brakel, Germany, depicting German rail operations during the summer of 1975 at a 1:87 scale. The layout features locomotives, wagons, and detailed reproductions of railway stations together with their surrounding landscapes.
After about ten years of research and documentation work, construction of the layout began in 2004. The exhibition opened officially in October 2005.
The layout shows the stations of Ottbergen and Bad Driburg as they looked in the 1970s, with reproduced buildings, track layouts, and the typical infrastructure of that era. Visitors can recognize the everyday world of German rail operations through many small details.
The exhibition opens Thursday through Sunday from Easter to October, and on Sundays only from November to April. It is worth checking the current opening times before your visit, as they change with the season.
All the landscapes and trees on the layout were made entirely by hand by five professional model builders and fifteen volunteers. The construction and later expansions together took more than 35,000 work hours in total.
