Schloss Rheder, Baroque château in Rheder, Brakel, Germany
Schloss Rheder is a Baroque château in Brakel, in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, with a long main facade flanked by octagonal pavilions and a central arched gateway. The complex is arranged around a horseshoe-shaped forecourt and contains rooms with stucco decorations on the walls.
The château was built in 1750 for Franz Joseph von Mengersen, following plans by Johann Conrad Schlaun and carried out by architect Johann Matthias Kitz. The site had been in use long before that, as records show a private brewery operating here from 1686.
The Chinese Room inside the château features hand-painted wallpaper from the 1700s, a style that was fashionable among European nobility of the time. It shows how owners here followed trends coming from far beyond their own borders.
The exterior facade and forecourt can be viewed from outside, but as the building is privately owned, access to the interior is not generally available. The location fits well into a walk around the area of Brakel.
The park holds text carvings by artists Jenny Holzer and Henri Cole cut directly into old tree trunks. These works are intentionally temporary, meant to fade over time as the trees continue to grow.
