Schloss Hinnenburg, Medieval castle in Brakel, Germany
Schloss Hinnenburg is a three-winged castle on a hilltop near Brakel, surrounding a rectangular courtyard and topped with mansard roofs and a round tower on the southern side. The building also holds one of the most important nobility archives in Westphalia.
The castle was first recorded in 1237 as the seat of Knight Berthold von Brakel. It passed to the von der Asseburg family through inheritance at the end of the 13th century, and they have shaped it ever since.
The interior rooms feature Rococo stucco work from the 18th century that reflects the taste of Westphalian noble families. This decoration covers walls and ceilings throughout the building.
The castle sits on a hilltop, so visitors should be prepared for an uphill approach. Access to the nobility archive requires an advance request through the Westphalian Archive Office in Münster.
An octagonal chapel built in 1658 stands on the grounds and was designed as a family mausoleum. Its Byzantine-inspired form is rare in this part of Germany and is easy to miss if you do not walk around the full estate.
