Schloss Hinnenburg

Schloss Hinnenburg, Medieval castle in Brakel, Germany

Schloss Hinnenburg is a three-winged castle on a hilltop in Brakel with mansard roofs and a round tower on the southern side surrounding a rectangular courtyard. It houses one of Westphalia's most important nobility archives today.

The castle was first documented in 1237 as the residence of Knight Berthold von Brakel. It passed to the Asseburg family through inheritance at the end of the 13th century, shaping it until modern times.

The interior rooms display elaborate Rococo stucco work that reflects the taste and craftsmanship of Westphalian noble families in the 18th century. This decoration shapes the character of the spaces and can be seen throughout on walls and ceilings.

The castle sits on a hilltop with an elevated position to keep in mind when visiting. Access to the significant nobility collection requires advance request through the Westphalian Archive Office in Münster.

An octagonal Byzantine chapel from 1658 stands on the grounds, serving as a mausoleum for family members. This uncommon architectural element often goes unnoticed but reveals the burial traditions of the family.
