Motte Kurtekotten

Motte Kurtekotten is a castle ruin with a central hill surrounded by a wide moat. The hill has an oval shape and sits like an island in the middle of water channels that still define the landscape today.

The estate arose during the height of the Middle Ages and was later controlled by monastic communities. In the early 19th century, this religious rule ended and the site was abandoned.

The name Kurtekotten refers to an old farmstead that once occupied this location. Visitors can see how the motte functioned as a fortified dwelling, with water serving as a natural protective barrier all around it.

The grounds are open to walk through and still show the traces of its medieval layout. Visitors should expect damp conditions, as the water channels define the area and the ground can be muddy depending on the season.

The central hill is covered with old oak trees that give the site a wooded appearance. This vegetation is part of a protected landscape area and helps the motte look like a green spot in the middle of the city today.
