Museum im Zeughaus, Historical museum in Vechta, Germany
Museum im Zeughaus is a three-story building presenting exhibits about the Stone Age, medieval times, and local history in Vechta. The displays span about 1,000 square meters and combine chronological presentations with thematic collections.
The building was constructed in 1698 as an armory, became a granary after the citadel's demolition, and served as a prison from 1816 to 1991. Its changing purposes reflect different periods in the city's history.
The Center for Experimental Medieval Studies operates here in collaboration with the University of Vechta, investigating daily medieval life through hands-on research. Visitors can observe these studies directly reflected in the exhibitions.
All three floors are wheelchair-accessible, allowing easy movement through the different time periods on display. Hands-on medieval workshops run regularly throughout the year and offer deeper engagement for interested visitors.
A reconstructed boat from the Charlemagne era has been displayed in Citadel Park since 2009, showing early medieval shipbuilding techniques. At about 9 meters long, it is a rare example of historical boat construction from that period.
