Matthiaskapelle Kobern, Romanesque chapel near Oberburg in Kobern-Gondorf, Germany
The hexagonal Matthiaskapelle stands on a hill with a diameter of 11 meters and features a central lantern-like tower rising 14 meters high.
Heinrich II of Isenburg built the chapel between 1220 and 1240 to house the head of Saint Matthias, which he brought back from the crusade in Damiette.
The chapel contains sculptured capitals displaying grotesque faces and figures, representing medieval architectural elements that contrast with its religious interior design.
The chapel opens to visitors on Sundays and holidays from Palm Sunday to All Saints Day, between 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
The architectural design resembles the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, with influences from religious buildings in Spain, Portugal, and Asia Minor.
