Niederburg, Kobern, Medieval castle ruin in Kobern-Gondorf, Germany.
Niederburg is a castle ruin in Kobern-Gondorf set on a hill above the Moselle in Rhineland-Palatinate. It consists of remains of a sturdy defensive tower, wall sections from a Late Gothic residential building, and fortified earthwork sections that remain visible today.
The castle was founded around 1100 and initially belonged to the Isenburg family before later becoming a fief of the Electorate of Trier. This transfer of control shaped how the fortress developed over centuries.
The name Niederburg reflects its position below the neighboring Oberburg fortress. Visitors can still see wall sections and a solid defensive tower that once controlled the Moselle valley.
The site is reached by footpath from the Mühlbach valley and can be visited without an entrance fee. The path goes through natural terrain, so bring sturdy shoes and allow time to explore the ruins.
The defensive tower has an unusual entrance positioned several meters above ground level that would have been reached by ladder. This design choice reveals the protective measures taken to keep the tower's inhabitants safe.
