Staustufe Lehmen, River barrage system in Lehmen, Germany.
Staustufe Lehmen is a barrage and lock complex on the Moselle River designed to regulate water flow and enable river navigation. The existing chamber spans approximately 170 meters long and 12 meters wide, with a power generation facility integrated into the structure.
The barrage was completed in 1961 and established a key water management system on the Moselle River. Subsequently, construction of a second, larger lock chamber was initiated to accommodate heavier vessel traffic.
The structure integrates water management infrastructure with regional development, supporting both commercial navigation and power generation through its hydroelectric plant.
The facility is open to public viewing from nearby footpaths along the riverbank. Keep in mind that active vessel operations through the locks occur regularly throughout the day.
A second lock chamber measuring about 210 meters long is currently under construction to handle heavier cargo barges in the future. This reflects the ongoing adjustment of the infrastructure to meet growing transportation demands.
