Märchensee, Natural monument lake in Rottenburg am Neckar, Germany.
Märchensee is a protected lake and natural monument in Rottenburg am Neckar, Germany, sitting within dense forest at around 475 meters in elevation. The lake has a rounded shape, green banks lined with benches, and walking paths that run through the surrounding woodland.
The lake formed in the basin of a former quarry that was gradually abandoned and taken over by nature. It was later designated as a natural monument to protect its ecological role within the broader landscape of the Swabian Alps.
The name Märchensee means Fairy Tale Lake, a reference to the way the water mirrors the surrounding trees and gives the place a dreamlike look on calm days. Locals use the shore mainly in summer for swimming and walking in the shade of the forest.
The lake is reached via Steinbruchstrasse, from where forest paths lead directly to the shore. In winter, the paths can be slippery, so sturdy footwear is a good idea before heading out.
Although the lake sits inside a protected area, it has a designated swimming spot that locals use in warmer months, which is unusual for a site with monument status. This combination of protection and everyday use makes it a rare example in the region.
