Rottenburg am Neckar, Episcopal town in Baden-Württemberg, Germany

Rottenburg am Neckar sits in northern Baden-Württemberg and spreads across seventeen districts along both banks of the Neckar River, covering 142 square kilometers. Elevation varies between the river valley and surrounding hills, with the town center positioned at roughly 349 meters (1145 feet).

Romans founded the settlement of Sumelocenna here around 98 AD and protected it with defensive walls. Alamannic tribes destroyed the site between 259 and 260, after which a new settlement history began.

Saint Martin's Cathedral has served as the episcopal seat of the Rottenburg-Stuttgart diocese since 1821, shaping the religious identity of the town. Visitors notice the connection between historic church buildings and residential quarters that spread across both river banks.

Regional trains and buses link the town to larger centers in the area, while different area codes serve individual districts. Visitors can navigate the compact old town on foot or reach outer districts using public transport.

The Sülchgau Museum preserves finds from prehistoric and Roman times that document the transformation of the region over millennia. Visitors see everyday objects and building components from Sumelocenna that bring daily life in the ancient settlement to life.
