Unteres Ammertal

Unteres Ammertal is a protected landscape area near Tübingen covering 348 hectares with meadows, fields, hedges, reed beds, and orchards along the Ammer River. The area stretches from Pfäffingen to Tübingen's northern city border and forms a patchwork of different landscape features.

The area was designated as a protected landscape in 1999 to preserve its agricultural character and local ecosystems. This protection safeguarded the established rural landscape from major changes.

Local farmers manage fields, meadows, and orchards that shape how the valley looks and feels throughout the year. This rural character is visible in daily land use and reflects a long relationship between people and nature in this region.

Several hiking trails run through the protected area, suitable for different fitness levels and interests. Bringing a map or offline navigation helps since the area is expansive with many branching paths.

Highland cattle graze in specific sections and naturally manage vegetation across their areas. These animals are deliberately used to maintain grassland health and create a balanced natural environment.
