Goethehäuschen, Octagonal garden house on Schlossberg, Tübingen, Germany.
The Goethehäuschen is an octagonal garden house perched on Schlossberg west of the old town of Tübingen. It offers views across the Ammerthal and Neckartal valleys and features the original timber framework, which was revealed again during restoration work in 1961.
The house gained its name after Johann Wolfgang von Goethe visited the location during an evening walk with publisher Johann Cotta in September 1797. The structure underwent various modifications over time before being restored closer to its original form in the modern era.
The structure stands as a testament to German literary history, marking the location where Goethe observed and documented the geographical features of Tübingen.
The building sits on a hillside with walking paths that are easy to reach on foot, providing a quiet spot to explore. Visitors should expect some gentle slopes and wear suitable shoes to make the climb comfortable.
An innkeeper added battlements to the top of the building in 1870, but these were removed again during the first half of the 20th century. This change shows how the building went through different phases before reaching its current appearance.
