Museum of the University of Tübingen, University museum in Tübingen, Germany
The Museum of the University of Tübingen occupies the upper floors of Hohentübingen Castle and displays more than 4,600 objects from seven archaeological collections. The exhibits range from Ice Age discoveries to Egyptian artifacts, spanning topics from ancient astronomy to early human creativity.
The museum was established in 2006 to house artifacts spanning 40,000 years of history. The collection grew from discoveries made in caves across the Swabian region, which was once a center of early artistic expression.
The museum exhibits the Vogelherd figurines, which represent some of the earliest human artwork and are designated as UNESCO World Heritage Ice Age Art.
The museum is housed in the upper levels of the castle, with collections clearly organized so visitors can move through rooms at their own pace. Guided tours are available to learn more about specific exhibits and their background.
One display includes a fragment of a bone flute carved from a griffon vulture bone, among the world's oldest known musical instruments. This small artifact offers an unexpected window into the musical abilities of early humans.
