Town hall of Tübingen, Gothic town hall in Marktplatz, Tübingen, Germany
The Town Hall of Tübingen is a late-Gothic building on the north side of Marktplatz, in the heart of the old town. The facade features painted murals, pointed-arch windows, and an astronomical clock added in the 16th century.
The building was first constructed in 1435, when the town was growing as a trading and administrative center. In the 16th century it was extended and decorated with the murals and astronomical clock that still appear on the facade today.
The building faces a square where a weekly market takes place on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, drawing locals and visitors alike. Farmers and vendors from the region sell produce and local goods directly in front of the old facade.
The building sits directly on Marktplatz and is about a ten-minute walk from the main train station through the old town. Cafes and shops around the square make it easy to combine a visit with a stroll through the center.
The astronomical clock on the facade shows not only the time but also the position of the moon and the sun through the year. It was made in the 16th century by a local clockmaker and still works today.
