Bühler Tal und Unterer Bürg, Nature reserve in Rottenburg am Neckar and Tübingen, Germany.
Bühler Tal und Unterer Bürg is a protected area in a valley landscape between Rottenburg and Tübingen, shaped by the Bühlertalbach stream that flows through it. The stream winds through ash forests and wet meadows that sit between 350 and 400 meters in elevation and give the valley its character.
The area was officially recognized and protected as a nature reserve in 1993. This designation followed growing awareness of the value of these wet valley landscapes in the Württemberg region.
Locals manage the meadows here through seasonal grazing and mowing that has been done for generations. You can see how people work with the land rather than against it, keeping open spaces alive alongside the forest.
The area is accessible on foot or by bike using paths that run through the valley. It is best visited in spring or summer when the meadows are green and the woodland trails are dry and easy to walk.
The Bühlertalbach is home to lampreys, rare fish-like creatures that depend on very clean and cool water. These animals reveal how important water quality remains here for specialized species.
