Sieben-Täler-Höhle

Sieben-Täler-Höhle, Natural cave in Katzenbach Valley, Germany.

The Sieben-Täler-Höhle is a natural limestone cave in Katzenbach Valley that extends about 215 meters into the mountain. The passages start narrow and low at the entrance but open up gradually as you move deeper, revealing the layered structure of the rock.

The limestone layers that make up the cave formed about 240 million years ago during the Muschelkalk period of the Triassic era. Water erosion gradually carved out the passages and chambers over millions of years, creating the passages visitors explore today.

The cave serves as a winter refuge for bats, which makes it an important natural sanctuary that visitors must respect during hibernation season. This ecological role shapes how and when people can enter the site throughout the year.

Bring a flashlight or headlamp since the cave is dark, and wear sturdy shoes because the ground is uneven and sometimes slippery. The entrance is less than one meter high, so you will need to crouch down, and dress warmly since the temperature inside stays cool year-round.

This cave ranks among the largest underground formations in the Tübingen district and sits at about 380 meters elevation. The name reflects how several streams flow into and through the cave from different surrounding valleys.
