St. Katharina, Gothic church in Eschwege, Germany
St. Katharina is a Gothic church featuring three naves supported by eight slender round pillars. The interior displays characteristic Gothic elements including network vaults and star patterns in the ceiling design.
Construction began in 1374 with the tower and continued over several centuries. The sacristy was completed in 1436, the choir in 1474, and the nave finished in 1492.
The name honors Saint Catherine of Alexandria, whose veneration was widespread during the Middle Ages. Today visitors can experience it as a place where the Protestant community gathers and practices its faith.
The church rises to approximately 75 meters and is easily recognizable from outside. Inside, visitors can admire a well-maintained 1839 organ that shapes the community's musical life.
Archaeological excavations in 1998 uncovered the foundations of an earlier church that was equally long but narrower than the present structure. This discovery shows that believers gathered at this site long before the Gothic building was constructed.
