Pfarrkirche St. Marien, Gothic church in Güstrow, Germany.
Pfarrkirche St. Marien is a brick church in the Gothic style featuring three naves with a straight eastern closure and three gabled roofs constructed entirely from red bricks. The structure displays the characteristic vertical lines and solid masonry typical of northern German brick Gothic architecture.
The church first appeared in written records in 1308 and underwent major reconstruction following a fire in 1503, reopening in 1508 with a completely renewed interior. This rebuilding established it as one of the region's most significant religious structures.
The interior showcases a remarkable 1522 altarpiece created by Brussels sculptor Jan Borman, featuring paintings by artist Bernaert van Orley that remain central to the church's spiritual focus. This artwork reflects the religious craftsmanship valued during its time.
Visitors can climb 196 steps to reach the observation platform at 41 meters (135 feet) high, offering views across the city. The climb requires reasonable fitness but provides the highest vantage point in Güstrow.
Inside the church stands a terracotta relief sculpture titled 'Angel of Hope' by artist Ernst Barlach, installed in 1979 on a pillar within the altar space. This modern artwork creates an interesting dialogue with the church's older religious pieces.
