Reichsburg Landskron, Medieval castle ruin in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler, Germany.

Reichsburg Landskron is a castle ruin standing on a 271-meter basalt cone near Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler. The structure still shows remains of double outer walls and fortifications built from basalt columns and slate rubble.

King Philipp of Schwaben began construction in 1206 to protect the important Aachen-Frankfurter Heerstraße trade route through the Holy Roman Empire. This road was vital for the region's power and commerce at that time.

The Marienkapelle beneath the castle, built around 1470, shows how people used this place as a sacred space over many centuries. The small chapel with its grotto behind the altar still conveys the religious importance this mountain held for visitors.

The castle grounds are open year-round and connected to hiking trails of varying difficulty levels. Wear sturdy shoes and expect uneven terrain when exploring the site.

Romans used this strategic location as a lookout point because it was near their fort Rigomagus, which later became the city of Remagen. This connection shows how this basalt plateau attracted people across more than 1800 years.
