Salzmannbau, Industrial heritage building in Bilk, Germany
Salzmannbau is an industrial building in Düsseldorf-Bilk featuring a distinctive facade of light-colored glazed tiles on a steel skeleton frame. The structure comprises a central longitudinal section with adjoining wings and currently serves as a residential and working space containing 106 rental units.
The building was constructed between 1904 and 1906 by architects Heinrich Salzmann and Ganzlin as headquarters for paper manufacturer Jagenberg Works. After paper production ended in 1984, the structure was repurposed and has since housed apartments, studios, and cultural facilities.
The building houses artist studios and exhibition spaces used by the Düsseldorf Cultural Office, which hosts public open studio events throughout the year. Visitors can experience the local art scene directly and interact with artists working in their studios.
The building is located at Himmelgeister Strasse 107h and is visible from outside, with public events held in the studios and exhibition areas. It is best to visit during open studio event times to explore the artist spaces and communal areas.
The building merges its original industrial architecture with contemporary uses including a jazz club and cafe-bar on the ground floor. This blend of cultural spaces, residences, and artist studios makes it a thriving meeting point where history and present-day life coexist.
