Schloss Schönau, Medieval water castle in Richterich district, Aachen, Germany.

Schloss Schönau is a former water castle in the Richterich district featuring brick walls with blue stone frames around its window and door openings. The building displays medieval foundations beneath its structured facade with a distinctive gabled entrance.

The site was transferred in 1244 by Emperor Frederick II to Heinrich von Aachen, establishing the von Schönau family here. The current structure was built in 1732 by architect Laurenz Mefferdatis on the medieval foundations of a three-winged water fortress.

The name comes from the von Schönau family who made this place their home for generations. You can feel how central this location is to local celebrations and formal events today.

The castle serves primarily as a wedding venue with ceremonies scheduled on specific days throughout the month. Visitors should check availability beforehand as the space is reserved for scheduled events.

The castle was built on the foundations of a medieval three-winged water fortress, leaving traces of the original fortifications visible beneath the modern structure. This layering of different periods in one location shows how architecture evolved at this same site over time.
