Heiligenhoven Castle

Heiligenhoven is a water castle in Lindlar with a mansion built between 1758 and 1760, surrounded by a moat and displaying pre-classical architectural elements. The estate is managed by the Adam Stegerwald foundation and includes a recreational area and an English-style landscape park with a pond.

The castle was first documented in 1363 and passed through several owners, including Johann van Eyckelinckhoven, Wilhelm von Steinrod, and Adolf Schenck von Niddegen. Following a fire in 1973, the mansion was reconstructed in neobaroque style with architectural elements from different historical periods.

The name Heiligenhoven comes from the Germanic word 'inghoven', meaning 'the house on the slope', connecting the building to its landscape setting. This linguistic heritage remains visible in how the structure sits on elevated ground, a detail you notice when walking the property.

The grounds are freely accessible for strolling through the gardens and around the water features, especially on dry days. Wear comfortable shoes since the paths around the castle and park vary in surface type.

The 1973 reconstruction combines architectural styles from different eras rather than recreating a single historical look, making it an example of how heritage buildings were restored in the 20th century. This blending approach is what gives the mansion its layered character today.
